World Biometrics Day

Biometrics Day, is a new date on the calendar of events to promote Biometrics as a permanent fixture of the future. Every year the event falls on October 8th, but this year’s Biometrics Day celebration in the form of a multi-campus debate with scientists, entrepreneurs and students will take place in Dubai on October 7th, but thanks to the possibilities of online streaming, now anyone can take part – from around the world.

World Biometrics Day

This year’s Biometrics Day celebration is being held at Dubai International Academic City, on the Curtin Dubai University campus, but anyone from anywhere on earth can participate in the event. Biometrics Day is a forum for discussion and a chance to introduce the concepts, opportunities and solutions provided by the use of biometrics as well as new technologies in everyday life, including a multidisciplinary debate with scientists, entrepreneurs and enthusiasts of biometric technology solutions.

Thirimachos Bourlai, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, School of Electrical & Computer Engineering, UGA, VP on Education - IEEE Biometrics Council (2020), Board of Directors - Document Security Alliance,Director: Multi-spectral Imagery Lab (MILAB)

Thirimachos Bourlai is an associate professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and and Adjunct Faculty at the Institute for Cybersecurity and Privacy, both at the University of Georgia. He also serves as an adjunct faculty at WVU in the Lane Department of Computer Science and Engineering, in the School of Medicine, the Department of Forensic and Investigative Science, and the Department of Chemical Engineering. He is the founder and director of the Multi-Spectral Imagery Lab, a Series Editor of the Advanced Sciences and Technologies for Security Applications, an Associate Editor of the Elsevier Pattern Recognition Letters Journal and of the IET Electronics Letters Journal. He is also a member of the Board of Directors at the Document Security Alliance, the former VP on Education of the IEEE Biometrics Council, and a member of the Academic Research and Innovation Expert Group of the Biometrics Institute. He has published 4 books in the areas of biometrics and identity management and has many conference papers, book chapters and magazine articles.

Adam Czajka
Assistant Professor, Computer Science and Engineering University of Notre Dame, USA Vice President, Finances, IEEE Biometrics Council

Dr. Adam Czajka is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Notre Dame, USA. His scientific interests include a wide spectrum of topics in computer vision, pattern recognition, biometrics and security. His recent research focuses on employing human intelligence to increase reliability of methods detecting unknown types of biometric presentation attacks. Czajka’s research has been funded by the US Department of Defense, IARPA, US Army, US National Institute of Justice, FBI Biometric Center of Excellence, European Commission, Polish Ministry of Higher Education, and numerous companies. He serves as the Vice President for Finances of the IEEE Biometrics Council.

Salih Ismail
Program Coordinator and a Lecturer in the School of Science and Engineering, Curtin University Dubai

Mr Salih Ismail is the Program Coordinator and a Lecturer in the School of Science and Engineering. He is currently pursuing his doctoral research in the security of cloud computing. His research interests include Cyber Security, the Internet of Things, Cloud Computing, and the Semantic Web. He graduated with a distinction in his MSc Computer Systems Management from Heriot-Watt University. He received his BSc (hons) in Information Technology from the University of Bedfordshire. Prior to academia he worked in the industry in various posts including IT Manager, Technology Officer, and Database Administrator and sat on many advisory boards for tech start-ups. He has received various awards showcasing his excellence in Cyber-Security including the prestigious Dubai Electronic Cyber Security Innovation Award.

Kris Slotwinski

Strong leadership, creativity and management skills within multinational environment. Champion in Cyber-Security, IT, e-commerce, Digital Business Transformation and Cloud. Anna Tarabasz
Dean Teaching Learning, Head of School of Business and Humanities, Associate Professor Marketing at Curtin University Dubai

Marketing, digital marketing, and e-commerce specialist, with over 18 years of experience (out of it 16 in academia, in Poland, France, Kazakhstan, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, and Australia), working previously in the banking, automotive, and cosmetics industry. Serves as independent marketing & e-commerce consultant and keynote speaker. External trainer, consultant, researcher, and business advisor for companies in MENAT region (FMCG (Cosmetics, HoReCa, Agriculture, Manufacturing, Service, Transportation, Banking, and Consulting industries).

Her research area and publications (in English, Polish and French) in scientific journals is focusing on Trends in Digital Marketing, Social Media Listening, SEO optimization & digital audit, eCommerce, Metaverse, and Cybersecurity.

Marcin Czugan
CEO, Association for Financial Companies in Poland (ZPF)

Graduated from University of Szczecin (Poland) both Law and Economics; he completed MBA in Strategy, Programme and Project Management at Gdańsk University of Technology. (Poland). He is professional Legal Counsel and member of the Board at The Regional Chamber of Legal Counsels in Gdańsk. From 2020 he is Chief Executive Officer at the Association for Financial Companies (ZPF), the biggest multisectoral association for financial companies in Poland (2016-2020 Vice-President at the ZPF and 2010-2016 Head of Legal Department). From 2015 to 2017 Chairman of the Legal and Policy Committee at the EUROFINAS (the European Federation of Finance House Associations) in Brussels (Belgium), the biggest consumer credit federation in Europe. Currently Board member of the EUROFINAS.

Laureate of the “Rising Stars Lawyers – Leaders of Tomorrow”; awarded as the “Person of the Year 2015 in Non-banking Consumer Credit Financial Sector”; awarded TOP 50 Managers 2021 of Loan Market in Poland.

Daniel Jarząb
CEO of PayEye

One of the authors, co-founder and CEO of PayEye. Experienced manager who has been associated with large multinational corporations for most of his professional life. His visionary approach and development in the structures of the world’s largest companies enriched him with experience that bears fruit today in building PayEye – a fintech with Polish roots and global reach,  which is the first in the world to develop a commercial full payment ecosystem based on the fusion of two independent types of biometrics – iris and face.

Mateusz Trokielewicz, PhD.
Board Member of Global Biometrics Council

He is a PhD in technical sciences, an expert with many years of experience in biometric identification using the iris pattern. Assistant professor at the Institute of Automation and Applied Computer Science of the Warsaw University of Technology. Author and co-author of several international publications in biometrics and biometric security and papers presented at major international scientific conferences. He is interested in industrial design, architecture, urban planning, infrastructure and photography. He loves travelling, growing plants, swimming, running and listening to music.

A graduate of the Wrocław University of Economics and Business in Wrocław and the University of Wrocław. Specialist in branding, service design and new marketing trends. Since 2006 – an employee of the Wrocław University of Economics and Business. Author, scientific editor and reviewer of numerous national and international scientific publications on management and marketing. Participant of more than fifty national and international scientific conferences and many scientific internships, in countries such as: the United Kingdom, Germany, Portugal, Italy, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates. Author of a publication published in 2019 by Wydawnictwo Naukowe PWN entitled: “Rebranding. Strategiczna zmiana dla organizacji” [Rebranding. A strategic change for the organisation]. She has also been a business practitioner since 2008.

Adam Sulich, Ph.D.
Professor at UEW

Adam Sulich is a professor in the Department of Advanced Research in
Management, Wroclaw University of Economics and Business, Wroclaw, Poland
and a visiting researcher at the Schulich School of Business, York University,
Toronto, Canada. His main research interests revolve around the problems of
ensuring sustainable development and the efficiency of enterprise operations in
an extremely complex and dynamic environment. His research interests include
green jobs, green management, green economy, network relationships,
sustainable network organizations, sustainable development. Adam Sulich gained
his research experience during the Erasmus+ exchange programmes in Belgium
at Vrije Universiteit Brussels and Czechia at Technical University in Ostrava. In
the business sphere, he specializes primarily in strategic analyses, including the
valuation of intangible assets. He has developed or co-authored several reports
related to the analysis and strategic review of large companies in various
industries

Daniel Adkins
Chief Executive Officer, Transnational Academic Group Middle East

Born in the United States, Dan began his career working in the information technology industry. During his time in the IT industry he performed IT services for companies including IBM, Dell, Clorox, Philips, Hershey’s, Coca-Cola, Merck, and VISA. Over the course of 20 years, Dan held numerous management positions, including CIO and CEO. Before coming to the UAE he worked extensively in the United States, India, Vietnam, the UK, and the Philippines. He has taught IT professionals in various disciplines including project management, quality management, and leadership skills.

Fawaz Nadim Habbal
PHD, MCS, BCS

Dr. Fawaz Habbal is an Assistant Professor has a PHD in E-Government
Applications and Business Information Technologies and his main specialization is
Process Automation, Artificial Intelligence and Business Innovative Technologies.
His research interests span both Computer Applications, Artificial Intelligence in
data prediction and Data Science. Throughout his academic experience as
Assistant Professor in several private and public universities in UAE as well as his
work as Co-Founder & Innovation and Digital Director for GEMINOS GROUP
additional to his previous experience as IT Director for Fujairah Government, he
has worked with several public and private sectors between UAE, SPAIN, KSA,
JORDAN, & MOROCCO to manage, develop and produce many intelligent projects
and solutions which focus on improving the performance of advanced computer
systems, application of data mining, Customer satisfaction statistics, and
business performance evaluation. In addition, Dr. Habbal was elevated to IEEE
fellow for his contribution to artificial recognition identification and on 2018 his
work with the Ministry of Infrastructure Development was awarded best
innovative project globally during ISARC 2018.
